The story of the heart can never be unwritten. Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away. But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her. Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love. REVIEW

This book is so beautiful and beyond sweet. I went into it, knowing there was so much hype around it and knowing that I would likely love it - and I did. Macy and her dad go to an open house, looking for a house to serve as a weekend escape. At the open house, Macy finds a boy, Elliot, sitting in her soon-to-be bedroom closet. They discover they both love to read, and a friendship is born. Every time that Macy comes to the house, her and Elliot spend hours sitting in the closet-turned-library reading, asking each other deep questions that they would never ask anybody else (i.e., Elliot asking Macy about her mom who passed away, discussions about sex, etc.), and forming a meaningful friendship. The book shifts timelines each chapter; going from 11 years ago in the weekend getaway house, the current day San Francisco where Macy and Elliot have run into each other after more than a decade. It’s clear there is hurt on both sides, but that there is still a deep love between the two of them. But it’s not that easy because Macy is currently engaged to Sean, a freelance writer, and Elliot does not have the full story of what happened 11 years ago and why Macy cut him out of her life. This book felt deep and I could feel the emotions, it was like everyone says truly beautiful. It was a pleasant, and easy 4 star read for me. It wasn’t quite five stars because I’m not the biggest fan of spice scenes because I find them hard to be written well and found some lines to be a little cringe-worthy. But it was still a great read.
